Apple' CareKit Opensource Framework To Develop Health Apps

Apple announced on Monday the launch of CareKit, a new developer tool that will make it easier to build healthcare apps.

latest trends toward patient-managed medical care, Apple unveiled its new CareKit software framework, which will let developers create new ways for people to manage their health conditions

Apple says the platform can be used to monitor symptoms and keep tabs on a medication schedule. Other use cases include sharing photos of a wound or quantifying range of motion by using the iPhone’s accelerometer and gyroscope.
CareKit is “empowering people to take a more active role in their care,” said Apple COO Jeff Williams.
The first app created with CareKit will be tailored for people with Parkinson’s, but Apple says that this tool has a variety of potential applications. They expect that it will be used for post-surgery progress, physical therapy, diabetes management, mental health, pregnancy and more.

CareKit will come with four basic modules for developers to build on, including:

1. Care Card, which lets people track their individual care plans and action items, with some activities tracked automatically via sensors in the Apple Watch or iPhone.
2. Symptom and Measurement Tracker, which lets people record symptoms and things like their temperature
3. Insight Dashboard, which maps symptoms against the action items in the Care Card to reveal efficacy
4. Connect, which lets people to share information and communicate with various health care providers and family about health status.

Some developers already using CareKit include:

1. Sage Bionetworks and the University of Rochester developing a tool to inform patients about their condition and care providers about treatment.
2. The Texas Medical Center is designing apps to let patients connect with care teams.
3. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is developing secure methods to let patients handle chronic care management through home health monitoring devices.
4. One Drop is developing management approaches for diabetics.
5. Start, by Iodine, helps manage antidepressant medication.
6. Glow is planning to incorporate CareKit modules into its pregnancy app, Glow Nurture.

“With ResearchKit, we quickly realized the power of mobile apps for running inexpensive, high-quality clinical studies with unprecedented reach,” Dr. Ray Dorsey, of the University of Rochester Medical Center, said in Apple's statement. “We hope that CareKit will help us close the gap between our research findings and how we care for our Parkinson’s patients day-to-day. It’s opening up a whole new opportunity for the democratization of research and medicine.”
